A Daily Walk With DietPower

Walking is the best exercise for weight loss. And the things you see!

To celebrate Flag Day, I've chosen a picture I took on King Street at the house beside the pond featured earlier on this page. A young man named Elijah should have been relaxing on the screened-in porch overlooking the pond this afternoon, having a beer after a hard day of splitting wood and mowing grass with this mom and stepdad. Instead, Elijah is at an undisclosed location in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan, searching for members of the Taliban and Al Qaeda who want to kill him—and us.

This family didn't fly its flags for Flag Day. The little flag in the flower basket and the bigger flag on the front porch are always flying, in hopes that Elijah will come home safe and sound. "I worry all the time," his dad told me when I stopped to talk, "but what can you do?"

What can you do? Support one of the many charities that provide aid and comfort to our far-flung troops. And of course, fly your flag. .

About this page: Precisely at noon each day, I step out of my office for a 3.5-mile walk around my Connecticut neighborhood. I carry a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TX5 pocket camera with a Leica 10x optical zoom lens. My object is to make an interesting photograph of at least one thing that is different that day.
